Cyprus is a sun-kissed paradise for humans, but for our feline friends, the scorching Paphos summer and stormy (when it rains it truly pours!) winters can make life as a stray kitty more than difficult. As tourists, you have a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of stray cats who call this sun-drenched island home. 

Here are some top tips:

1. Hydration Hero: Water is vital for survival, especially in the sweltering heat. Look for shaded areas where you can leave bowls of fresh, clean water. Check them regularly and refill as needed, as water evaporates quickly under the blazing sun. Plastic bowls can get scorching hot, so consider ceramic plates/bowls.

2. Food Fairy: While it’s tempting to share your holiday snacks, human food isn’t always suitable for feline stomachs. Offer dry kibble or wet cat food in small, manageable portions. Leave it in shaded areas to prevent spoilage, and don’t forget the water to wash it down! 

3. Shelter Superhero: The midday sun can be brutal, so provide cool havens for strays to escape the heat. Look for shaded areas underneath bushes and trees. If possible, leave out cardboard boxes lined with towels or blankets for temporary shelters.

4. Cool Cat Crusader: If you have access to a hose, consider giving your furry friends a quick spray down during the hottest part of the day if they’ll allow it. Focus on their paws, belly, and neck where they can cool down quickly. Be gentle and avoid spraying their face or ears.

5. Health Guardian: While you might not be a vet, keep an eye out for signs of heatstroke in stray cats. Excessive panting, glazed eyes, drooling, and lethargy are all red flags. If you suspect heatstroke, seek immediate veterinary attention.
